In 2003, I took my business on the road for three months while traveling by car around much of North America. In 2007, I took almost as long for a road trip from Massachusetts to Alaska and back. In those four years, several things changed that significantly affected some practicalities of taking care of business when away from the office and one’s home base for that long a time. If you’re planning extensive business travel and haven’t been on the road in a couple of years, some of these changes might come as a surprise to you, too.

1. Internet access. In 2003, high-speed Internet was a specialty item in the hospitality industry, restricted to a few name-brand hotel and coffee-shop chains. Before I left on my 2007 trip, several people told me blithely, “Wi-fi is everywhere now.” I’m glad I looked skeptically at that assessment.

During ten weeks of travel in Canada and the U.S., only one-third of the time did wi-fi work conveniently and right away in the room where we were staying. Another third of the time we were able to use wi-fi after quite a bit of technical fiddling or by going to the motel office or restaurant. And the other third of the time, we would have been without Internet access had wi-fi been our only option. I had three backup options for this contingency: going online on dialup with the modem in my laptop; using my handheld phone/computer (an AT&T 8525) to pick up email; and telephoning my virtual assistant to ask her to check my email for me.

2. Receipts. If you’re planning to deduct business travel expenses on your taxes, then you need to save receipts and you need a written record of the expenses and their business purpose. What changed since 2003 in this regard is that more and more businesses provide receipts on thermal paper whose ink fades and smudges with the least exposure to sun or friction. This means that if you shoe-box your receipts into a pocket or a compartment in the car before you record your expenses, you could be unable to decipher your evidence. I’m not sure what the IRS’s take on this development will be, but I’m glad I had the discipline to record the expenses in a little notebook at least every day or two.

3. Plastic. During our 2003 trip, we had to keep hitting up ATMs for cash, because quite a few places where we had to pay for things did not accept credit cards. In 2007, the only places where we really had to have cash were a few tolls and a few tourist attractions. We had one Canadian ten-dollar bill with us left over from the previous trip, and apart from that we were able to charge nearly everything. When a panhandler tried to hit us up for cash, we were able to say truthfully that we had none. We were putting everything on plastic, sorry!

4. Cell phone coverage. Our surprise here was that there wasn’t as much improvement in cellular service for the more remote sections of the U.S. as we expected. Along interstate highways, you can pretty much expect to get a signal. But otherwise, where population density is low or nonexistent, cell phone coverage is usually likewise absent. A big exception was national parks. I had a long conversation with a friend back home from Denali National Park in Alaska, where the whole county has only 1800 or so full-time residents.

5. Mail forwarding. This change isn’t the progress toward efficiency that you might expect. It took longer in 2007 than in 2003 to get postal mail forwarding going and longer to stop the forwarding. My postmaster explained that forwarding was now centralized and computerized. Whereas previously, individual post offices had been in charge of forwarding mail addressed to residents in their service area, now this was handled at the regional mail processing facility. My postmaster could put in the request to start or stop mail forwarding, but he had no direct control over the process, and it took 7-10 days for the forwarding and the no-more-forwarding orders to take effect.

Be prepared for these and other changing conditions, and you’ll have a better, easier and more prosperous time away from home.

Taking a holiday to Hong Kong is often on people’s lists of ‘things to do before you die’, right up there with visiting Niagara Falls and swimming with dolphins. Some question it as such a spectacle, but I don’t need convincing that a city break to Hong Kong may be one of the most amazing things you ever do. Here’s five reasons why.

5. Victoria Peak

Located on Hong Kong Island itself, Victoria peak offers the best panoramic views of the province as a whole. While the top of the mountain is taken up with ugly communications antennae, there are areas close to the summit which afford breathtaking sights and a more relaxed feel; high above the main – and sub-tropical – part of Hong Kong, holidays should include at least one trip up the mount for the remarkable change in climates. The peak also has two major shopping centres, a funicular railway, and the Zoological botanical gardens of Hong Kong – holiday enough for anyone, even without the rest of the province!

4. Government House

Government House is well worth a visit, especially on one of its six open days a year. If possible, plan your Holidays in Hong Kong to fit around one of these days at the beginning, middle or end so you can go into the building itself. The house was the home of the British governor from 1855 to 1997, and is stylistically and historically interesting. It was heavily augmented during the Japanese occupation during World War Two, and is controversial in placement, specifically in terms of its Feng shui – a popular Asian belief in fortune being drawn from architectural positioning. Visiting is a must on any city break to Hong Kong.

3.The Tian Tan Buddha

The Tian Tan Buddha is a huge bronze statue of the Buddha. Situated on Lantau island, it is the world’s tallest bronze, outdoor and seated Buddha and is a regular site for pilgrimages as well as people on holidays. Hong Kong is to a large extent Buddhist and experiencing the culture of the province isn’t complete with an exploration of all of the aspects the state has to offer.

2. Avenue of Stars, Hong Kong

The Avenue of Stars in Hong Kong is Asia’s equivalent of Hollywood Boulevard. Visiting the site while on holiday to Hong Kong is almost mandatory if you’re a fan of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh, John Woo or Chow Yun Fat. A star on the broad walk of famous Asian actors, directors and stars are a treat for any fan, and those who are history buffs as well will love the history of Hong Kong’s 100 year old cinematic industry as laid out on nine red pillars.

1.Star Ferry

The Star Ferry is famous as the passenger ferry service in Hong Kong. The cheap and wonderful journey around the islands in Hong Kong is utilitarian and magical in equal measure, and you’ll be side by side with Hong Kongers and tourists alike. An icon on a par with the Staten Island or Maid of the Mist Ferries, The Star Ferry is the perfect beginning and introduction to the state, or the ideal end to a memorable Hong Kong city break.

Kieron Sellens is the marketing manager of the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AiTO). With Hong Kong holidays from AITO, you can tailor-make the dream holiday.

Weekend holiday breaks are a great way to refresh yourself, unwind and recharge your batteries before getting back into the grind of working Monday morning. Long weekend breaks can usually start from Thursday straight after work and arriving back on Monday, therefore you would not need to take so much time off. The best way to fully appreciate your time off on a weekend holiday break is to take part in sporting activities.

Ski weekends are a very popular way of taking your mind off the real world and feel rest assured by the prospect of losing calories whilst on holiday. Going skiing in France or Italy, has been a popular choice for many and was once exclusive to the rich and wealthy. These days skiing is something that everyone including young people and students are able to enjoy sliding down slopes of the French Alps, without worrying about breaking the bank.

Looking for the right resort for the perfect ski weekends getaway, can prove to be a difficult task especially if this is the first ski trip you have ever made. For first-timers this is a very important part of your skiing experience as this is what will help to improve your skiing ability, for example choosing the resort with the best slopes suitable for beginners. There would be no point in choosing a short break in Morzine, France, if it is popular amongst expert and professional skiers.

A resort like Morzine is good for large groups and for people who are familiar with skiing on an intermediate level. Beginners will most likely feel overwhelmed by the amount of people taking part in skiing and intimidated by the expert skiers. Resorts such as Flaine or Meribel offer a great deal of comfort in practising your skiing techniques and provide good teaching grounds for private skiing tuition. Beginners should consider paying the extra cash on taking up on private skiing lessons, although group ski lessons are good for people not so keen on doing it on their own.

For those who are more experienced in the field of skiing, will perhaps feel that their ski weekends are best enjoyed in places such as Chamonix, Morzine, or Chatel In France. Other resorts which offer a diverse piste and off-piste skiing are Courmayeur in Italy, Verbier in Switzerland or Schladming in Austria. These resorts offer a great variety for the young or experienced thrill seekers, however beginners may feel out of place, therefore its is best to select your resorts carefully.

When travelling for a short skiing weekend break, it is always a good idea to buy insurance prior to boarding the plane. This is imperative to people going for the first time and is certainly a must for even the most professional of skiers, as it is best to prepare yourself for any unpredictable situations. It is not always a good idea to stick with the cheapest equipments as they may not be as durable as new equipment. Always purchase equipment and attires that is custom fitted for you, by approaching a well known retailers. If in doubt approach someone with some background in skiing.

The problem with taking a ski weekend break is that the only way people are able to travel further is if they are willing to pay the extra cash on the journey there and taking the time on fully enjoying the experience. Longer breaks are generally better for those looking to enjoy a relaxing time abroad as well as skiing. This could also be an ideal time for beginners to practise and improve on their skiing. One thing is for certain, that is a weekend away skiing will mean a good short burst of adrenaline rush and a good way to vent out any pent up frustration.

Anna Stenning loves to go on ski weekends away on a regular basis to get through the winter blues and to relieve any frustration or stress.

Most of us associate water skiing with summertime fun – warm sunshine, beaches and picnics – so it may come as a surprise that water skiing was born in Minnesota in 1922 when Ralph Samuelson used two boards and a clothesline to ski across Lake Pepin. Samuelson has been credited by the American Water Ski Association as the first water ski racer, and the first to jump a ramp and slalom ski, as well as the first to hold a water ski show, too.

Like Samuelson, avid enthusiasts will water ski nearly any time, any where there is an opportunity, even when winter temperatures and chilly water are a deterrent for most people. Fortunately, no matter what city and state you call home, there’s probably a local lake or other body of water where you can get in some ski time, perhaps even practice your gainers and other tricks.

Of course, skiing at the same location all the time can become routine. Add a little excitement to your water time this year by planning a water skiing vacation. Whether you are a novice or expert, you can have some added fun by water skiing at one of these five great locations:

Top U.S. water skiing destinations

1) San Diego, Calif. – With a climate that provides ideal conditions year-round and an average of 264 days of sunshine each year, San Diego is a water skier’s dream. It’s also the home of Mission Bay Park, the largest manmade aquatic park in the U.S. Located just 10 minutes from downtown, Mission Bay offers hardcore skiers the opportunity to take an early morning jaunt around the bay, and still make it to the office on time. In addition, there’s a variety of water ski classes for everyone from the novice to the experienced. For a little more excitement and a change of pace, skiers can cruise around the freight and military ships in San Diego Bay. A variety of local lakes are perfect for those that prefer freshwater water skiing. Plan your trip to San Diego the weekend of Oct. 9,, 2009, and you’ll be able to watch the 5th U.S. Open Water Ski Racing National Championships, too.

2) Austin, Texas – As the Live Music Capital of America, Austin’s earned a reputation as a vibrant city that exemplifies a young, active outdoor lifestyle. For water skiers, the long summers and short winters provide almost year-round opportunity to hit the water. In addition to Lake Austin and Lake Travis, Austin offers several world-class facilities built specifically for water skiers:

- Austin Aquaplex – The Aquaplex is known for “easy” water with a medium-to-high viscosity – great for slalom and jump-ski enthusiasts.
- Guadalupe Ski Plex – Built to accommodate competitive water skiing, Guadalupe is home to three lakes, two slalom courses and a ski jump, as well plenty of boat docks and storage areas.
- Utopia River Ranch – For professional lessons, trek to Utopia River Ranch, a private water ski training facility located near Staples, just outside of Austin.

3) West Palm Beach, Fla. – South Florida, from Key West and Miami to West Palm and Orlando, is a hub of activity for water sports lovers of all kinds. With few days under 70 degrees, South Florida’s Palm Beach County offers ski enthusiasts nearly year-round opportunity, as well as two major water ski attractions and several exciting competitions.

If you travel on a regular basis for business, you most likely have your own techniques when it comes to getting the best deals, packing the right clothes and getting through airport security quickly and easily. Still, there are some little-known tips and tricks that may come in handy when you travel for business, whether you’re traveling domestically or abroad. Here are five of the best little-known travel tips for business traveling.

1. Get up and move on long trips.

It’s commonly known as “Economy Class Syndrome”, but it happens to travelers in business and first class as well. Its technical name is deep vein thrombosis, a blood clot that develops in the legs and can travel to the lungs or the brain. Doctors believe that a combination of conditions contribute to the syndrome, including sitting in cramped conditions for 10 or more hours, low cabin pressure, low humidity and dehydration. You are especially at risk if you smoke, have high blood pressure, or have a history of cardiovascular problems.

Get up and walk up and down the aisle at least every two hours, and be sure to remain hydrated. Remember, coffee, tea and alcoholic beverages actually contribute to dehydration. Drink water and fruit juices instead. The best way to give you an extra advantage is to book an aisle seat with extra leg room.

2. Keep your eye on airline fees.

Save your company a bit of extra money by being aware of hidden airline fees. Shop around for the best rates and package deals if you need to rent a car or are traveling to multiple destinations. While boarding an airplane, keep your bags below 50 pounds.

3. Take full advantage of what your hotel offers.

When you are away from home you do not have your usual connections, your hotel can help you. Perhaps you need a printer at 2 am, or reservations for a business dinner at an appropriate restaurants. At home, you would know exactly where to go, but when you are traveling, you need answers from a reliable source. A business class hotel can provide these answers and more.

Most business travelers know whether their hotel offers high spend internet and wifi connections, but hotels that deal with business travelers often take those services to a far higher level. The front desk clerk or concierge will often go above and beyond to be sure that you have everything you need for your stay, from a replacing a cell phone charger to arranging pickup and delivery of important papers.

4. Make the most of layovers.

Your best case scenario may not include any layovers, but that’s not always possible. If you find yourself in a foreign airport with time to kill, make the most of it. Many airports around the world feature special lounges and amenities for frequent and business class flyers. You can take advantage of a hot shower, a massage or a nap; plug in to recharge your laptop and cell phone batteries; put your feet up in a massage recliner. Working out may not be an option, but a brisk walk between terminals can serve the same purpose – and get your blood flowing and your brain working again.

Not traveling business or first class? Many airports offer “pay per visit” access to the business/first class lounge that will still allow you access to all the amenities offered to business and first class travelers.

5. Pack smart for safety and comfort.

Spend as much time thinking about your safety as you do about packing the right tie or blouse. Keep a “go bag” ready to go with your current prescriptions, over the counter medications that you use frequently, your health insurance information and an abbreviated medical history. Pack your own amenities kit for the plane trip, too. Bring travel socks, eye shades, an inflatable pillow and mints, as well as travel size moisturizer, toothbrush, toothpaste and mouthwash.

Five Additional Quick Business Travel Tips:

1. If you travel to the same city frequently or for extended periods, look into corporate housing instead of hotel stays. The savings could add up in just a few trips.

2. When using a pay phone at the airport, avoid isolated or poorly lighted locations, and face outward while you’re on the phone.

3. Check to see if your credit card or personal insurance covers you while driving a rented car and save the expense of rental insurance.

4. Ask at airport check-in if there are exit row or bulkhead seats available. They’re usually the last ones assigned and there’s a good chance you’ll get a better seat without the cost of requesting a specific seat.

5. Be sure to keep a photocopy of your passport and ID back at the hotel. It will make things immensely easier in case of loss or theft.
