SunshineBob off on his hoildays.

sunshine1It’s difficult in today’s climate of post-recession blues to think about spending money on Holidays.. The worlds a different place today than it was just a handful of years ago when  Mrs SunshineBob and I would think nothing on spending £5000 on a holiday somewhere or another.. Between 2002 and 2009 we went to the Maldives twice,Las Vegas twice ,Borneo ,Singapore ,Thailand ,Barbados ,two Caribbean cruises but the greedy bankers screwed it all up.

Since then we ,like many of so called middle classes have taken a less “Laissez-faire” approach to the way we spend our hard earned cash and funneled our efforts into building assets rather than working on our tans ,well that’s gonna change… I think its time to have a holiday ,its been three long years since I have been anywhere and we deserve it !!

sunshine2So with holidays on our minds we hit the net. Coffee at the ready, the started to surf and were surprised with the amount of great offers out there. I guess that the travel industry got hit as much as anybody when the world unfolded so dramatically after Lehman Brothers filed chapter 11 and the world reached for its collective Wellbutrin XL tabs… But where should we go ??

Mrs SB and I live in Spain, down on the Costa Del Sol near Marbella,so a euro jaunt to the sun would be a bit of a busman’s holiday.. East or West ? I do like the east,we have had some great trips in Asia and I fancied going back to Thailand, maybe Phuket but as always Mrs SB had other ideas..

sunshine3She like Barbados ,I meant really likes it ,don’t get me wrong it’s a lovely place and to be fair its pretty high up there on the “100 places to visit before you die”  but I’ve done Barbados to death and our meager budget would mean staying somewhere new. We always stay at LittleArches ,its down on the south coast near Oistens and on one of my favorite beaches in the world ,Miami Beach . I small but wonderful hotel, and somewhere I can wholeheartedly recommend.

So we started thinking Caribbean ,I was leaning towards Cuba ,its somewhere we have not been for 12 years and I got a hankering to wander round the streets of Havana. Mrs SB did not fancy all that “wandering about” malarkey and wanted to sit in the sun ,soak up some rays and just chill.. So,we have already been to Jamaica,Antigua and St Lucia for holidays so they we struck from the new list. We dug out our cruise photos and stated to think about all those places we stopped off from day at,arranging them into yes ,maybe and no piles… We needed a resort (all inclusive) the yes pile that we could fly direct to. After a little horse trading with mrs SB we plumped for Grenada and set to work seeking out the best deal we could..

sunshine4Another coffee &Anis came and went as we started to narrow down our choices of resort;don’t forget we are on a budget for the first time in many years so all the top resorts were struck off the list much to mrs SB annoyance who  fancied a La Source uber-suite at close on  $1000 a night  Now,we might be poor but we still have standards so at the same time we disregarded all the stuff at the bottom too.. We were left with a short list of four or five resorts all three and four stars. We had no preference and hit the computers seeking out the ultimate deal and our new shortlist. This bit was simple and we had a winner in less than an hour, the Rex Grenadian . Booked through those nice people at travelzoo.com we bagged a seven night, beach front all inclusive deal with flights, transfers and tax for a very modest £695 per person.  I reckon I could drink that much in a week !!

We go in October ,more to follow..
